{"id":12401,"date":"2022-05-12T13:41:57","date_gmt":"2022-05-12T13:41:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/galleriaborghese.beniculturali.it\/en\/?post_type=exhibition&#038;p=12401"},"modified":"2026-03-16T13:23:39","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T13:23:39","slug":"titian-dialogues-of-nature-and-love","status":"publish","type":"exhibition","link":"https:\/\/galleriaborghese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/exhibition\/titian-dialogues-of-nature-and-love\/","title":{"rendered":"TITIAN: DIALOGUES OF NATURE AND LOVE"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-12401\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-12401-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-12401-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-12401-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>From\u00a0<\/strong><strong>14\u00a0June to 18 September 2022<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>Galleria Borghese<\/strong>\u00a0will present\u00a0<strong><em>Titian: Dialogues of Nature and Love<\/em><\/strong><em>,<\/em>\u00a0curated by Maria Giovanna\u00a0Sarti,<em>\u00a0<\/em>an exhibition-dossier celebrating the loan of\u00a0<strong><em>Nymph and Shepherd<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/em>an autograph work executed by the Venetian master around\u00a01565 \u2013 granted by the\u00a0<strong>Kunsthistorisches<\/strong><strong>\u00a0Museum of Vienna<\/strong>\u00a0as part of\u00a0\u00a0a\u00a0programme\u00a0of cultural exchange between the two institutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The encounter between the work from Vienna and Titian\u2019s paintings in the Galleria provides an opportunity to\u00a0<strong>link the works around several constant themes<\/strong>\u00a0in the painter\u2019s production:<strong>\u00a0Nature<\/strong>,\u00a0understood as landscape, but also as a place of human action;\u00a0<strong>Love<\/strong>\u00a0in its diverse forms \u2013 divine, natural, matrimonial; and\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Time,\u00a0<\/strong>which marks and regulates the human life cycle, assimilating it into the harmony of the universe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Nature and Love\u00a0<\/strong>are bound by a harmonious relationship, part of the life cycle, to which alludes the amorous and musical allegory of\u00a0<strong><em>Nymph and Shepherd<\/em><\/strong>, one of the master\u2019s last works, considered by some the\u00a0<em>summa<\/em>\u00a0of his artistic aspirations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhibition finds its natural setting in\u00a0<strong>room XX<\/strong>, on the second floor of the museum, where paintings by Titian and other artists of the Venetian school are already on display. The current arrangement of S<strong><em>acred and Profane Love<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong><em>\u00a0Venus Blindfolding Cupid<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u2013\u00a0<\/em>placed facing one another \u2013 suggests displaying\u00a0<strong><em>Nymph and Shepherd\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>on the other axis, facing\u00a0<strong><em>The Three Ages of Man<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em>on the opposite wall, which is the\u00a0<strong>replica by\u00a0Sassoferrato,<\/strong>\u00a0who during the 17th century copied\u00a0\u00a0- in all probability for the Borghese family itself \u2013 one of Titian\u2019s painting that was present in Rome.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><em>Nymph and Shepherd\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is the perfect\u00a0<em>pendant<\/em>\u00a0to the painting on the opposite wall, it also being a reflection \u2013 but at the end of the old painter\u2019s life \u2013 on the passing of time, which devours everything.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost as if commenting on the themes and style of this intense dialogue are the\u00a0<em>Adam\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Eve<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0<strong>Marco\u00a0Basaiti<\/strong>, two pseudo-Giorgionesque\u00a0singers, and\u00a0<strong>two other Titians<\/strong>, the<strong><em>\u00a0Flagellation of Christ<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em>and the\u00a0<strong><em>St Dominic<\/em><\/strong>, which are chronologically near the painter\u2019s later works displayed in the room. The exhibition is completed by the problematic painting\u00a0\u00a0- formerly thought to be a prototype by\u00a0\u00a0Veronese, but currently considered a late derivation from a lost\u00a0Titianesque\u00a0model \u2013 portraying\u00a0<strong><em>Venus, Cupid, and a Satyr<\/em><\/strong>, displayed as a comment on\u00a0<em>Venus Blindfolding Cupid<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhibition will be accompanied by a\u00a0<strong>catalogue<\/strong>\u00a0published by\u00a0<strong>Art\u2019em<\/strong>, with a preface by the Director of the Galleria Borghese,\u00a0<strong>Francesca Cappelletti<\/strong>, and texts by the curator,\u00a0<strong>Maria Giovanna\u00a0Sarti<\/strong>.
