From\u00a0<\/strong>14\u00a0June to 18 September 2022<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0Galleria Borghese<\/strong>\u00a0will present\u00a0Titian: Dialogues of Nature and Love<\/em><\/strong>,<\/em>\u00a0curated by Maria Giovanna\u00a0Sarti,\u00a0<\/em>an exhibition-dossier celebrating the loan of\u00a0Nymph and Shepherd<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/em>an autograph work executed by the Venetian master around\u00a01565 \u2013 granted by the\u00a0Kunsthistorisches<\/strong>\u00a0Museum of Vienna<\/strong>\u00a0as part of\u00a0\u00a0a\u00a0programme\u00a0of cultural exchange between the two institutions.<\/p>\n

The encounter between the work from Vienna and Titian\u2019s paintings in the Galleria provides an opportunity to\u00a0link the works around several constant themes<\/strong>\u00a0in the painter\u2019s production:\u00a0Nature<\/strong>,\u00a0understood as landscape, but also as a place of human action;\u00a0Love<\/strong>\u00a0in its diverse forms \u2013 divine, natural, matrimonial; and\u00a0\u00a0Time,\u00a0<\/strong>which marks and regulates the human life cycle, assimilating it into the harmony of the universe.<\/p>\n

Nature and Love\u00a0<\/strong>are bound by a harmonious relationship, part of the life cycle, to which alludes the amorous and musical allegory of\u00a0Nymph and Shepherd<\/em><\/strong>, one of the master\u2019s last works, considered by some the\u00a0summa<\/em>\u00a0of his artistic aspirations.<\/p>\n

The exhibition finds its natural setting in\u00a0room XX<\/strong>, on the second floor of the museum, where paintings by Titian and other artists of the Venetian school are already on display. The current arrangement of Sacred and Profane Love<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Venus Blindfolding Cupid<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>\u2013\u00a0<\/em>placed facing one another \u2013 suggests displaying\u00a0Nymph and Shepherd\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>on the other axis, facing\u00a0The Three Ages of Man<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>on the opposite wall, which is the\u00a0replica by\u00a0Sassoferrato,<\/strong>\u00a0who during the 17th century copied\u00a0\u00a0- in all probability for the Borghese family itself \u2013 one of Titian\u2019s painting that was present in Rome.\u00a0\u00a0Nymph and Shepherd\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is the perfect\u00a0pendant<\/em>\u00a0to the painting on the opposite wall, it also being a reflection \u2013 but at the end of the old painter\u2019s life \u2013 on the passing of time, which devours everything.<\/p>\n

Almost as if commenting on the themes and style of this intense dialogue are the\u00a0Adam\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Eve<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Marco\u00a0Basaiti<\/strong>, two pseudo-Giorgionesque\u00a0singers, and\u00a0two other Titians<\/strong>, the\u00a0Flagellation of Christ<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>and the\u00a0St Dominic<\/em><\/strong>, which are chronologically near the painter\u2019s later works displayed in the room. The exhibition is completed by the problematic painting\u00a0\u00a0- formerly thought to be a prototype by\u00a0\u00a0Veronese, but currently considered a late derivation from a lost\u00a0Titianesque\u00a0model \u2013 portraying\u00a0Venus, Cupid, and a Satyr<\/em><\/strong>, displayed as a comment on\u00a0Venus Blindfolding Cupid<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will be accompanied by a\u00a0catalogue<\/strong>\u00a0published by\u00a0Art\u2019em<\/strong>, with a preface by the Director of the Galleria Borghese,\u00a0Francesca Cappelletti<\/strong>, and texts by the curator,\u00a0Maria Giovanna\u00a0Sarti<\/strong>. Also scheduled for publication on this occasion is the first volume of the\u00a0Galleria<\/strong>\u00a0series (De Luca\u00a0editore) \u2013 monographic, in-depth studies of themes and works of the Borghese collection \u2013 dedicated to Titian, and in particular the painting\u00a0Venus Blindfolding Cupid\u00a0<\/em>and the works of his last years, on which diagnostic investigations have recently been carried out, whose results will be presented for the first time.<\/p>\n
