{"id":690,"date":"2019-05-28T15:48:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-28T15:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/galleriaborghese.beniculturali.it\/en\/?page_id=690"},"modified":"2022-11-25T09:52:26","modified_gmt":"2022-11-25T09:52:26","slug":"sala-1-sala-della-paolina","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/galleriaborghese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/il-museo\/la-villa\/sala-1-sala-della-paolina\/","title":{"rendered":"Room 1- Paolina Room"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-690\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-690-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-690-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-690-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Room 1 hosts one of the most famous sculptures of the Borghese collection: the <em>statue portraying <\/em><em>Paolina Borghese Bonaparte as Venus Victrix<\/em>, by <strong>Antonio Canova <\/strong>(1757-1822).<br \/>\nDisplayed in this room only since 1889, the work is linked to the paintings on the ceiling dedicated to the <em>Stories of Venus and Aeneas, executed in 1779 \u00a0by<\/em><strong> Domenico de Angelis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The five paintings (in the centre the<em> Judgment of Paris <\/em>and on the sides <em>Minerva asks the Fate Atropos to cut Troy\u2019s \u00a0thread of life; Venus convinces Jupiter to save Aeneas; Aeneas flees Troy with his father, Anchises, and his son, Ascanius; Juno asks Aeolus to unleash storms against Aeneas) <\/em>are framed by the trompe l\u2019oeil painted by <strong>Giovanni Battista Marchetti <\/strong>(1730-1800).<\/p>\n<p>Formerly called the \u201cVase Room\u201c because of the presence of the ancient neo-Attic crater now in the Louvre, the room has preserved little of its eighteenth-century appearace, which was designed by <strong>Antonio Asprucci. <\/strong>Deprived of its most precious sculptures by their sale to Napoleon, it was redesigned in the second decade of the nineteenth\u00a0 century under the direction of the architect <strong>Luigi Canina <\/strong>(1795-1856). As mounted in the preceding late-eighteenth-century arrangement, the sculptures stand on ancient altars and marble columns, while the walls are decorated by ancient and modern reliefs at geometrically precise intervals.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst the works displayed are the precious <em>Bacchus Herm <\/em>(1773), by <strong>Luigi Valadier <\/strong>(1726-1785); the <em>Group of Leda with the Swan and Eros<\/em>, a Roman work from the third century C.E. (with an unrelated head of Antonia Minor from the first century C.E.); the two Asian-marble columnar sarcophagus fronts with<em> Apollo and the Muses<\/em> from the third century C.E.; the Parian-marble relief with <em>Ajax and Cassandra <\/em>from the first century B.C.E.; and the grey-marble <em>Portrait of a Man <\/em>with a peculiar exotic hair style from the sixteenth century.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Room 1 hosts one of the most famous sculptures of the Borghese collection: the statue portraying Paolina Borghese Bonaparte as Venus Victrix, by Antonio Canova (1757-1822).
