{"id":817,"date":"2019-06-02T18:50:48","date_gmt":"2019-06-02T18:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/galleriaborghese.beniculturali.it\/en\/?page_id=817"},"modified":"2022-11-25T10:16:50","modified_gmt":"2022-11-25T10:16:50","slug":"sala-10-sala-di-ercole","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/galleriaborghese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/il-museo\/la-villa\/sala-10-sala-di-ercole\/","title":{"rendered":"Room 10 &#8211; Hercules Room"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-817\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-817-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-817-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-817-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>The room was originally known as the \u201c<em>Room of Sleep\u201c<\/em><em>,<\/em> because it hosted a canopy bed and the <em>Allegory of Sleep<\/em>, in nero antico marble, by <strong>Alessandro Algardi <\/strong>(1595-1654), now in room XV.<br \/>\nLike the preceding room, it was decorated by a painter with a northern European culture, the Tyrolese <strong>Christoph Unterberger <\/strong>(1732-1798), who came to Rome from Vienna and became a member of the Accademia di San Luca in 1772.<br \/>\nThe series on the ceiling is based on the figure of Hercules, the victorious emblem of Marcantonio Borghese, who commissioned the work. Executed in 1784, it consists of five paintings with episodes connected with the hero\u2019s famous labours: the <em>Apotheosis of Hercules<\/em>; <em>Hercules receiving the horn of Achelous from the Naiads;<\/em> <em>Nessus and Deianira<\/em>; <em>Hercules and Lichas<\/em>; and the <em>Death of\u00a0 Hercules<\/em>. The paintings are set in large laminated frames, while trompe-l\u2019oeils open up at the corners.<br \/>\nOn display in the room are sixteenth-century paintings from the schools of Florence, Parma, Bologna, Brescia, and Genoa in central and northern Italy.<br \/>\nA pupil of Andrea del Sarto, <strong>Brescianino <\/strong>(active between 1506 and 1525) executed the <em>Venus with Two Cherubs<\/em>, which as early as the seventeenth century was compared to the one by <strong>Lucas Cranach <\/strong>(1472-1553).<br \/>\nThe <em>Deer Hunt <\/em>by <strong>Niccol\u00f2 dell\u2019Abate <\/strong>(c. 1509-1571), in a courtly and narrative style, and the <em>Magic Procession, <\/em>attribuited to <strong>Girolamo da Carpi <\/strong>(1501-1556), with evident reflections of Bosch\u2019s world, were conceived as <em>pendants.<\/em><br \/>\nOver the porphry fireplace is one of the collection\u2019s masterpieces, the <a href=\"http:\/\/galleriaborghese.beniculturali.it\/index.php?it\/116\/correggio-danae\"><strong>Danae<\/strong><\/a>, by \u00a0<strong>Correggio <\/strong>(1489-1534), which was executed in 1530 and acquired by Prince Camillo in Paris in 1827.<br \/>\nThe sculpture in the centre, portraying a <em>Gypsy Girl <\/em>in grey marble, white marble, and inserts of gilded bronze, is by <strong>Nicolas Cordier <\/strong>(1567-1612), from Lorraine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The room was originally known as the \u201cRoom of Sleep\u201c, because it hosted a canopy bed and the Allegory of Sleep, in nero antico marble, by Alessandro Algardi (1595-1654), now in room XV.
