{"id":872,"date":"2019-06-03T05:37:36","date_gmt":"2019-06-03T05:37:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/galleriaborghese.beniculturali.it\/en\/?page_id=872"},"modified":"2025-03-19T15:31:01","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T15:31:01","slug":"sala-19-sala-di-elena-e-paride","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/galleriaborghese.cultura.gov.it\/en\/il-museo\/la-villa\/sala-19-sala-di-elena-e-paride\/","title":{"rendered":"Room 19 &#8211; Helen and Paris Room"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-872\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-872-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-872-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-872-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>Together with the Egyptian Room, the Room of Helen and Paris was the one that enjoyed the greatest success at the time of the decoration of the building in the eighteenth century, thanks to the decoration of the walls and the ornaments of the furniture, which constituted one of the most precocious Roman examples of the reworking of Antiquity.<br \/>\nThe room attained its greatest fame when, from 1838 to 1881, the statue of Paolina Bonaparte (1780-1825) as Venus Victrix was on display there. The masterpiece by <strong>Canova <\/strong><strong>became the ideal finishing touch to what was already one of the most famous rooms because of its exquisite Neoclassical style.<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Scottish painter and antiquary <strong>Gavin Hamilton <\/strong>(1723-1798) executed the decoration of the ceiling, prompted by the <em>Iliad<\/em>, between 1782 and 1784. In the centre is the <em>Death of Paris among satyrs and nymphs<\/em><em>,<\/em> on the sides the <em>Judgment of Paris<\/em>, <em>Paris taking music lessons from Cupid, and Venus offering Helen to Paris, <\/em><em>which \u2013 with the Abduction of Helen <\/em><em>and the Death of Achilles \u2013 <\/em><em>was replaced by those by <\/em>Vincenzo Camuccini and Giovanni Piancastelli. (The two originals moved in 1891 to the Castello Borghese in Pratica di Mare are now in the Museo di Roma.) The decorations on the ceiling were executed by <strong>Giovan Battista Marchetti <\/strong>(1730-1800).<br \/>\nThe sculptural decoration of the room is the work of <strong>Agostino Penna <\/strong>(1728-1800) and <strong>Vincenzo Pacetti <\/strong>(1746-1820). The latter executed the giallo antico fireplace with decorations in bronze by <strong>Antonio de Rossi <\/strong>(1782) and the four reliefs over the doors, also in giallo antico, depicting the gods involved in the Trojan War (Jupiter, Venus, Mars, and Apollo).<br \/>\nSeveral of the paintings on display \u2013 such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/galleriaborghese.beniculturali.it\/index.php?it\/134\/domenichino-la-caccia-di-diana\">Hunt of Diana<\/a> and the <em>Sibyl <\/em>by <strong>Domenichino <\/strong>(1581-1641) and the <em>Aeneas Fleeing Troy <\/em>and the <em>St. Jerome<\/em><em> by <\/em><strong>Federico Barocci <\/strong>(1535-1612) \u2013 are very well known.
