IO’S EROTIC PHANTASIA. AN INVENTION BY CORREGGIO
In anticipation of the opening of the exhibition Metamorphosis. Ovid and the Arts, scheduled for June 23, Galleria Borghese offers a rich program of events designed to accompany the public on a journey through the theme of transformation. This itinerary through art, myth, and imagination invites visitors to explore change as a visual, emotional, and symbolic experience.
Among the scheduled appointments, the conference Io’s Erotic Phantasia. An Invention by Correggio will be held on May 20 at 5:30 – 6:30 PM, curated by Professor Philippe Morel of the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. The meeting delves into the famous figure of Io painted by Antonio Allegri da Correggio around 1530 for the Duke of Mantua: a scene inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, where Jupiter dissolves into an enigmatic cloud while the nymph surrenders to an ambiguous and sensual embrace.
Through references to antiquity, Neoplatonic suggestions, and an extraordinary dreamlike dimension, Correggio transforms the myth into a powerful erotic fantasy, creating an image capable of profoundly influencing European painting, particularly French art of the eighteenth century.
