TITIAN. DIALOGUES BETWEEN THE SACRED AND THE PROFANE: GALLERIA BORGHESE MEETS THE ANNUNCIATION FROM TREVISO CATHEDRAL

From 20 October to 8 December 2026, Galleria Borghese presents Titian. Dialogues Between Sacred and Profane: Galleria Borghese Meets the Annunciation from Treviso Cathedral, curated by Maria Giovanna Sarti. This focused exhibition brings together, for the first time, Titian’s Annunciation, on loan from Treviso Cathedral, and works by the Venetian master already held in the museum’s collection.

The initiative forms part of the commemorations marking the 450th anniversary of Titian’s death and continues Galleria Borghese’s series of focused exhibitions, which explore specific themes and groups of works within the collection through comparisons with works from other institutions. The format was launched in 2022 with a project devoted to Titian,

Titian. Dialogues of Nature and Love, which brought the Nymph and Shepherd from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna into dialogue with several paintings by Titian in the Borghese collection.

At the heart of the exhibition is the Annunciation from Treviso Cathedral, temporarily transferred to Rome to allow restoration work to be carried out on the frescoes by Pordenone in the Malchiostro Chapel. Before the loan, the panel underwent major conservation treatment, which brought to light new evidence relevant to its interpretation. This includes an inscription bearing the date, Titian’s signature and a reference to the commission.

The exhibition has been made possible by the generous loan of the Diocese of Treviso, with scholarly contributions from the Fondazione Centro Studi Tiziano e Cadore, in collaboration with the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore, and with the support of DBA Group.
